Why visitors combine it with the Vatican

A 10–15 min walk from St Peter's Square along the Tiber. Lower crowd pressure than the Museums, and the rooftop terrace gives a clean shot back to the dome. This is a state museum run by the Italian Ministry of Culture — separate from every Vatican ticket. Open Tue–Sun 09:00–19:30 (last admission 18:30), closed Mondays; first Sunday of the month is free. Verified 2026-10-12.

The full route

  1. Ground floor — the Dromos and the circular ramp inside Hadrian's mausoleum.
  2. Papal apartments — the Sala Paolina, Sala di Apollo and treasury rooms.
  3. Rooftop (Angel Terrace) — 360° over Rome to the Alban Hills on clear days.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Castel Sant'Angelo line long?
book online in summer — August walk-up queues run 40+ min; off-season walk-up is usually fine.
Can I combine the castle and the Dome in one day?
yes, both are timed but on separate systems. The castle first (cooler at midday), the dome after.
Is the rooftop worth it at sunset?
yes — golden hour lines up the dome of St Peter's straight down the Tiber.
